SHIPPING VESSELS COLLIDE IN HOUSTON SHIP CHANNEL

BREAKING: A bulk carrier and chemical tanker collided in the Houston Ship Channel Shortly after noon today near Morgan’s Point. The incident happened during a dense fog advisory, it’s believed the fog played a role in the collision. The tanker is leaking MTBE methyl tert-butyl ether, a flammable toxic fuel additive. The Coast Guard has responded. No injuries have been reported. People in the immediate area are being advised to shelter in place.

The vessels involved in the collision are reported to be the MV CONTI PERIDOT and the CARLA MAERSK which was carrying 216,000 bbls of MTBE. The CARLA MAERSK has leaked an unspecified quantity of MTBE into Galveston Bay.
